An engagement ring is chosen once, and a wedding band joins it later. The best pairings are planned with the two side by side, because how they sit together matters as much as how each looks alone.
Will it sit flush?
Some engagement rings have a setting that sits low or overhangs the band, which leaves a gap when a straight wedding band is worn beside them. There are two good answers:
- A curved or contoured band, shaped to follow the engagement ring so the two sit snugly as a set.
- A straight band with a small gap, which many people love for its modern look. It is a style choice, not a mistake.
If your engagement ring’s setting sits high enough, a straight band will slide neatly beneath it.
Matching the metal
Wearing the same metal and karat is the safest choice for daily wear, because two rings that rub together will wear at the same rate. Mixing yellow and white gold can look beautiful; just expect the softer one to show wear a little sooner.
Width and proportion
As a guide, a band about the same width as the engagement ring’s band looks balanced. A slim pavé band adds sparkle without competing; a plain polished band lets the centre stone lead.
Which goes on first?
Tradition places the wedding band closest to the heart, nearest the palm, with the engagement ring above it. Many people wear them the other way round, or on different hands. Wear them the way that feels like yours.
